As they say, always look on the bright side of life.
You have disrupted our everyday lives in so many ways, forcing us to get out of our comfort zones, taking a dip in a pool of uncertainties. Yet you have allowed us to find new opportunities. You have brought us a whole new experience and taught us to fight you with increased resilience, purpose, hope and find the possible in what we could have easily perceived as impossible. You have allowed us more time together with families and loved ones, appreciating the simplicity and authenticity of things around us.
Here’s my story to you.
My then fiancé (now hubby) and I had planned for a wedding of our lifetime, inviting over 450 guests. Little did we know that we would had to scrap our tireless months of preparations and painstakingly re-plan again 5 days before we tied the knot. The amount of stress and anxiety the both of us and our parents had to go through was indescribable. A fairy-tale wedding ended up becoming one involving just 10 of us on 29th March. A ballroom wedding ended up being an intimate affair in the temple, in the divine presence of God. To my surprise, we thoroughly enjoyed the ceremony and were very grateful to everyone who had played a part in giving us the emotional support.
Just as we emerged from our big day feeling relieved and elated, we were eagerly looking forward to our honeymoon. We had to put that on hold. Our housing unit purchase was not processed in time for us to move in as Singapore went into circuit breaker mode. Thanks to you again, I had started adapting, living together at my in-laws’, spending time learning baking recipes from my mum-in-law, finding all ways possible to spend quality time with my hubby, finding better versions of myself every new day. And yes, not forgetting all the fun he and I had building our Old Trafford Stadium with 3,898 Lego pieces all in 2 weeks! Football craze can do some good, during times of misery, especially when all EPL games have been suspended! Thanks to you again, COVID-19.
During the circuit breaker we were all at home, working virtually through amazing technological tools such as Webex, Teams and Zoom. On most days of the first two weeks of the circuit breaker, my bed became my working space as I tried to keep myself focused on completing my office duties in a timely manner and refrained from working late nights. My hubby and I often found ourselves running to various corners of the house to find a spot to take our work calls that at times tended to occur simultaneously. And yes, we ended up having petty squabbles over securing our favourite spot at times.
During this period, I’ve realised and cannot emphasise enough on the importance of mental well-being. I shared with everyone close to me on the importance of paying attention to this crucial aspect in their daily lives; to keep sane and healthy as they remained cooped up in their homes. Consuming healthier snacks, meditation & yoga, listening to wellness forums are just some of the things that I indulged myself and my loved ones in, during the circuit breaker.
With this shared belief, my folks at Narpani Pearavai Youth Committee (a non-profit organisation for the Indian youth community), got together during our free evenings to organise some initiatives by collaborating with other non-profit organisations & individuals to curate and conduct online programmes for the community to participate. We successfully conducted a few live sessions on mental wellness & fitness in a fun and innovative manner. It heartened us very much to see all sessions well attended by the online community. Thanks yet again.
As I end my heartfelt note to you, COVID-19, thanks for making me a better person. I have learnt to persevere through adversity and adapt faster to changing circumstances. Thanks to the many new-found experiences you have provided me with, from the insane number of times of sanitiser spraying, temperature checks, mask-ups & social distancing.
Thanks for the bittersweet memories, but it’s about time you leave...
